AI instrument recognition for sheet music PDFs
Assign parts with AI – instead of doing it by hand for hours
Anyone who has ever manually assigned a bundle of parts with 30 individual pages to the right instruments knows: it takes time. And it is error-prone. The AI instrument recognition in Notenarchiv takes this work off your hands.
How it works
- Upload a PDF – whether a single part or a collective PDF with many pages
- Mark the area where the instrument name appears on the page (e.g. top left)
- Click on “Load AI suggestions” – the AI analyses every page and recognises the instrument
- Review the suggestions and apply them with one click
The recognition uses the instrument list of your organisation. The more aliases you maintain (e.g. “Clarinet 1”, “Kl 1”, “Bb Clar.” for clarinet 1), the better the results.
When does recognition work well?
The AI delivers the best results with:
- Clearly printed instrument names – machine-set text is recognised reliably
- Standard names – common instrument names in German, English or Italian
- Well-scanned PDFs – straight, high-contrast, at least 200 dpi
When does it get harder?
- Handwritten labels – recognition is optimised for printed text
- Very small text – can lead to errors with low-resolution scans
- Unusual abbreviations – can be solved via aliases in the instrument settings
Aliases make the difference
Every instrument in your organisation can have any number of alternative spellings (aliases). The AI matches the recognised text against all aliases. Example for “1st clarinet in Bb”:
- Klarinette 1
- Clarinet 1
- Kl 1
- Bb Clar.
- 1st Clarinet in Bb
The more complete the aliases, the higher the hit rate – even with international publishers.
What does AI recognition cost?
AI instrument recognition is included in the Premium plan (19,90 €/month incl. VAT). Each organisation has a monthly page allowance. In the Basis plan the feature is not available.
